Roeg, Nicholas

   Nicholas Roeg started out in British cinema in 1947 as an editing apprentice, becoming a cinematographer in the 1960s (with credits including The Masque of the Red Death, Fahrenheit 451 and Far from the Madding Crowd) before directing his first film Performance in 1968 (with Donald Cammell). This was followed by Walkabout, Don’t Look Now and The Man Who Fell To Earth (1976). In these early works, Roeg displays a virtuoso command of the film medium, particularly in his use of associative montage sequences, disrupting and resisting conventional narrative methods. Since the mid-1980s Roeg has produced more commercial work in Castaway (1987) and The Witches (1990), and several films for television including Sweet Bird of Youth (1989) and Heart of Darkness (1994).
